Serial AT Attachment (SATA) is an interface standard used to connect hard drives/SSDs to a motherboard. SATA III supports up to 6 GB/s.
The SATA protocol replaced the Parallel ATA standard that required a parallel connection. SATA transfers individual bits of data in serial fashion.
